Top O’ The River
3330 Mcclellan Blvd
Anniston, AL 36201-2126
Anniston, AL was the first deployment I did on my own back in February of 2008, and it is also where I learned a very very valuable tactic: Ask the employees where they eat. Hotels are not known (at all) for being well paying jobs, so that helps me eliminate the overpriced joints. Also, locals can point you in the right direction far better than any dumpy “welcome to the area” promo.
Being down South, and being from the South, I knew I needed to get me some of that Southern food. So I did. Oh man I did.
Top O’ The River is your basic family style restaurant that serves the local dish. You can get all kinds of “soul food” type things there, and from what I can tell, they are all good.
Personally, I had fried catfish, jalapeno cornbread, fried pickles, a baked potato, and some slaw.
It was amazing, and something like $10.
Here is the thing, southern food/soul food is very hard to eff up. It is pretty simple, so anybody can do it to a degree. The trick is “making it like mom used to” because no matter who you are or where you’re from, your mother (or father, or mother/father figure, or somebody) made the best food you’ve ever had. This place doesn’t do that. But damn it was close, and for $10 within a 45 minute window, nobody can complain.
If you’re ever in the unfortunate spot of being in Anniston, AL look on the bright side, you can eat here.
PS: I highly recommend the fried pickles.
